Recently, in northern Venezuela, two powerful earthquakes struck in rapid succession within less than one minute—measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, respectively. Multiple large buildings collapsed, and residents have needed to evacuate for safety reasons. The earthquakes have caused severe disruption to essential local services, and the authorities have declared a state of emergency. The earthquakes have led to over 235 deaths and 4,300 injuries, and rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing. The death toll may rise as rescue operations continues.
Rescue teams carried debris by hand and conducted search-and-rescue operations to locate trapped residents.
After the disaster, many families are displaced, living in fear of aftershocks, and some have taken to the streets. They face serious challenges, including food shortages, lack of clean drinking water, and worsening sanitation conditions. Among the affected populations, children are often the most vulnerable and most likely to be harmed. We are especially concerned about children’s health and safety, especially girls, who are at greater risk of threats such as sexual violence and human trafficking.
In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, large numbers of people fled in panic, fearing further aftershocks and spending time outside and on the streets.
In response to this critical situation, Plan International is now working closely with local partners to rapidly assess the situation and identify the most urgent needs, including food, clean water, hygiene supplies, and other essential emergency relief items. We are prepared to immediately scale up our humanitarian response, providing timely support to affected children and families during the most crucial period after the disaster.
Disaster relief efforts are a race against time. Plan International urgently calls on all sectors of society to lend a hand right away and support emergency relief operations. Your donation will help us provide basic necessities for affected children and families in desperate need in Venezuela, helping them get through this difficult time.
